SMT Club news

ROBOTICS CLUB

March was the final countdown! The robotics build seasonamounted up to one peaking moment, the Autodesk Oregon Regional FIRSTcompetition at the Memorial Coliseum on March 5 & 6. 30 hours of competition over three dayswere jam packed with spirited teams sporting their colors, mascots dancing tothe Macarena, and robots in action battling it out on the field. A total of 104fierce rounds were played, each consisting of 3 teams on a red alliance and 3on a blue alliance. Each team had a robot playing a goalie, midfield, andforward positions. Teams also had a chance to score extra points by raisingtheir robot completely off the ground before time ran out. Intense showdowns were fought out on the field, and rivalries as electric as Optimus Prime and Megatron s ensured that there would never be a dull moment. Sparks flew and a couple of robots even went up in smoke but the Stormbots, with a lightning fastrobot and dynamic design ended the qualification rounds in 8th outof 61 teams, automatically moving in to the quarter finals! The Stormbotsdesign even won the General Motors Industrial Design award due to itsinteresting use of a vacuum system and pneumatics. Even though we didn t bringhome the gold this time, the Storm definitely blew away the competition!

Knowledge Bowl

The Knowledge Bowl is classed as a club, but is really a competition team fielded by our school to compete with other schools in the Metro league, region and state in a series of academic information games. KB players form a team of four or five and try to answer questions faster and more accurately than another team. The format of the meets is a written round of 60 questions with a 45 minute time limit, then two or three oral rounds in which a buzzer system identifies the first team to have an answer. The competition is fast and intense. Visit KNOWLEDGE BOWLwebsite for additional information.
